Prosthodontics is the specialty of dentistry concerned with the diagnosis, restoration and maintenance of oral function, comfort, appearance and health of the patient by the restoration of the natural teeth and/or the replacement of missing teeth and contiguous oral and maxillofacial tissues with artificial substitutes.
What is a Prosthodontist?
A Prosthodontist is a Dental Specialist who has successfully completed a formal advanced education program in prosthodontics and holds such specialty designation from the Alberta Dental Association and College.
The entry level as a specialist in prosthodontics in Canada requires a candidate to pass the Royal College of Dentists of Canada Fellowship examinations (RCDC). These examinations are designed to evaluate the candidate's ability to demonstrate expertise in prosthodontics consistent with the high standards of practice recognized by the RCDC. The standards used by the examiners in judging a candidates performance is the reasonable, ethical and prudent practice of prosthodontics in Canada for the diagnosis, preservation, restoration and maintenance of oral and contiguous structures (teeth and jaws).
Why is this important to you?
Patients are referred to Prosthodontists by their Dentists based on a number of factors that make their restorative dental treatment complex or complicated beyond the perceived skill level of the general Dentist. Prosthetic and restorative dentistry has greatly changed over the years with improved dental materials, instruments and techniques that require advanced knowledge and skill. Your Prosthodontist will deliver a sound diagnosis and develop a thorough treatment plan, followed by careful and skilful execution of the plan, including routine maintenance.
