A thorough assessment of the patient's medical status provides informaiton to allow the dentist to formulate a clear and comprehensive treatment plan. That assessment should include:
- recognition of deviations from normal health
- informed judgements regarding possible complications associated with the proposed dental treatment
- identification of situations where a medical consultation or medical referral is required
- gathering as much relevant information as possible from the patient
